Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport serves the southernmost part of Thailand. The airport is located at more than 10 miles from the city centre. The arrivals terminals record a maximum of 200 passengers after every hour, with the departures peaking at more than 215 persons. Though Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport is relatively small as compared to the international ones within the country, it has room to park planes as big as Boeing 737.
Plans are underway to make expansions of Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport from its current size. Because of increasing passenger numbers due to the well performing tourism sector, Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport will soon receive a status as international. To achieve this, there is need to improve the current status of infrastructure which stands at a deplorable state. Meanwhile, the passengers utilize the public means of transport and trains for transit to the city centre. Usually, the available transport means tend to get overcrowded especially when tourist activities are at the peak. You do not want to be caught up in this!
To be on the safe side, you should hire a car for transport to avoid the overcrowded public means of transport to the city centre. You should also bear in mind that the rail transport is mostly subject to delays hence not the perfect choice if you intend to keep time. Taxis, on the other hand, are available though few in number. The few operational taxis charge exorbitant prices especially for a tourist. But when you hire a car, standard rates are charged which are constant irrespective of the country of origin, race or ethnic background. Besides, people who rent a car at Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport are entitled to numerous privileges including any location albeit remote.
Tourism in the City
The evident increase in the number of tourist arrival at the airport is because of the coastal climate, historic sites, the favorable coastal climate and the rich culture of Thai people. In addition, the recreational activities will keep you occupied throughout your vacation. While in the city, you can do the following:
- Visit Wat Phra Mahathat Woromaha Vihan: This is the most important Thai Temple in the South. If you are lucky, you will see the tooth relic of Budha...real Buddha! Nearby, there is a very tall chedy surrounded by multiples of small ones. The chedi is really old though it got the latest renovations just before the end of the last decade. The beauty of the chedi is marked by the decorations of Buddha statutes which is surrounded by elephants. You just have to be there to see!
- The City Wall: How can your trip be complete without the marvelous view of the city wall? Be there to have a sight to behold of the mighty gates dating back to tens of centuries ago.
